Excellent protection without compromising awareness.
By ppmd
If you don't mind the size and price, this is excellent hearing protection without losing situational awareness irrespective of where you shoot. This is a large, full-sized, bulky, solidly built, made-in-the-USA hearing protection with a 5-year warranty that works very well and is comfortable. It provides the maximum attenuation (33 dB NRR) for muffs of this type.Pros:1. Very quick response (fast "attack time") to high-pressure (>80 dB) sounds so you can still hear what's occurring around you (from yahoos at the range making "unsafe comments" to range commands from Range Safety Officers) between gun fire sounds.2. Takes CR123 batteries instead of obscure "medical" batteries. Their earlier models required odd medical batteries. The ones I got use commonly available CR123 batteries. YOU MAY NEED TO SPECIFY AND ASK FOR THE MODEL THAT USES THE CR123 BATTERIES when ordering.3. Very comfortable to wear for many hours.Cons:1. Lack of detail to construction. I see slight glue over-run at the junction between the leather and the muff.2. Size is too large if you want to properly mount a rifle. You may consider the smaller version, but you would sacrifice a bit on hearing protection.3. No detailed instructions that show the locations of the jumpers for the model I own. I may have the latest (4th generation) muffs, and I could not find detailed depiction of jumpers for my muffs. It really does not matter as the jumpers are very well labeled on the muffs, but when you pay so much money for hearing protection, I would expect attention to all details. My hearing means the world to me and I also enjoy shooting my pistols a lot, so I sprung for the best. My frequent visits to an indoor 10-lane range allowed me to thoroughly test this electronic muff. Irrespective of caliber (.223 rifle, .22 cal, 9mm, .40 cal, 357 Magnum, .45 cal, etc.) the active sound attenuation works very well. I am also able to hear my surroundings, including the whirling of the air conditioning fan, someone dropping a bullet, or a spent casing landing on the ground. I have not tried plugging anything into the input plugs (such as to listen to scanner, music, etc.), but such feature may be helpful to someone who needs to hear his communications radio's audio discreetly at the range.Operational hints:I set the muff's gain to "high", but I did NOT turn up the ear muff's volume control because it hears TOO well, especially in an indoor range! High gain setting simply meant that the microphones are twice as sensitive as the "low" setting (as per the manual for 3rd generation Pro Tac muffs). I also found that I received the maximum protection and benefit by making sure the ear muffs straps and cups are properly fitted onto my head and ears.I now use a traditional ear plug AND these ear muffs (with the volume turned up HIGH in both ears) while shooting indoors, but use only the muffs when shooting outdoors. This is purely personal preference. If you want to offer these ear muffs extra protection during transport, I would recommend Seahorse SE-300F Protective Case With Foam. It offers a snug fit, with room for extra batteries and other small accessories.Would I purchase these ear muffs again? Yes. Would I recommend these to friends? Yes. What would I purchase next? Probably the Pro Ears Tac Slim Gold NRR 28 Ear Muffs with 2 Lithium 123a Batteries, solely for the ability to easily mount a rifle while wearing electronic ear protection.

Discreet on the outside, gold on the inside!
By R. McLaughlin
Wow. I gave away my Peltors after wearing these for one shoot. I had tried to "set it off" by clapping real hard right in front of my face, like I do the Peltors, but it did not seem to work. Well, shooting will be the real test. I had the volume turned up high, to the point where I can hear my breathing, and the shooter next to me with any subtle movements. Surely I am about to go deaf, but I had faith.Time to shoot. I raised my .45 auto and fired off seven shots. Amazing! Not only were the gunshots dampened to the point where they were not at any harmful level, but I could still hear myself breathing! I counted under my breath and still heard it. I suppose if anyone was standing by you and mumbling under their breath they better make sure they speak nice of you.The unit is large and of simple exterior design. No sexy lines or curves, so if you lay these down they may be ignored as they appear to be any typical set of earmuffs. The PRO EARS logo is so large as to be shouting at you, and adds to the apparent cheapness of the unit. But that is looks only. The inside is amazing. My only whining is their weight. With one battery on each ear, and a completely duplicated set of circuit boards, the weight is noticeable. You will notice they are on, but the normalcy of speaking without straining to hear is a distinct advantage.Buy the best and you only cry once.

Fantastic!

I learned of these muffs while attending the Front Sight four day handgun shooting course. One of the students had a set and let me try them.I had been using a much cheaper set that worked, but not as well as these. These muffs don't block out all sound like my cheaper ones did, but they do reduce the sound to non-harmful levels so you can continue to hear range commands for safety purposes. I came home, told my husband about them and we bought two sets. You can also turn up the sound gain for hunting purposes to hear game moving around, while still getting excellent hearing protection.I decided on this model because of the hearing protection level - better protection than from any other brand I found. Capable of offering great protection for larger, magnum handguns, rifles and shotguns and, at the same time, offering the ability to still hear range commands. My husband also uses his while operating his tractor. These muff have a plug in for an MP3 player and that allows him to listen to music or radio through his MP3 player to kill some of the boredom of operating a tractor all day.
