for the price, pretty amazing, but don't expect top of the line

let me say first that I own an Arri light kit with a 1k and chimera, so I am very familiar with what a top of the line light kit is. I also work on hollywood sets so I know what the big boys use. Having said that, I looked at a ton of low cost lights before I found these - most of them are all 4-5 ceramic screw in bulb rigs, cheaply made, and most of them are designed to use CFL bulbs, which only come un daylight, and the horrid 2700 color temp. bulbs - who would ever want light that yellow?But then I found this little package: for $200 they sell you two 800w light housings, lamps, stands, barn doors for both, and a large soft box for both lights - two of everything. The lamps(bulbs) are just like the Arri 1K lights, small coiled bulbs that produce a proper tungsten light that matches all my other pro light gear. these are basically cheap chinese knock offs of Arri lights, and all in in, I'm pretty impressed.Build quality:it's certainly not Arri, or made in germany or even Lowpro for that matter, I can't find anything written (there are NO INSTRUCTIONS at all) but I am 99% sure these are made in china. But I have to say that they actually are not that bad. the light housings are all metal where it counts, the stands are tube aluminum (the hinges and clamps are all plastic except for the screw, that's a bummer, but for $200, what do you expect?) The Barn doors are pretty cheap - I already had to tighten the hinges so the doors would stay put, but honestly, the item description doesn't even mention that you get barn doors, so they were totally bonus for me( I'm very glad to have them). In general, I will need to treat these more carefully than my real pro lights, but I believe that with proper handling, these should last a good long while.Oh - the 'case'. they come packed in a black nylon bag.(it's shaped like a rectangle, but it's really just constructed like a giant duffle bag, no structure, no liner, nothing) it seems cool, until you open it and realize that the stuff is all "shipping packed" inside with cheap cardboard and styrofoam. So once you unpack the gear, it totally has no use to carry this stuff. I would recommend looking for a better case to lug this around in. (see below about the soft box issue)ADDED NOTE:I did some research and discovered that the Plano XXL storage trunk is a great buy ($24.99 @ HomeDepot) and the light kit fits in perfectly. (Amazon sells it for $39.99) It even has wheels. I bought it at HomeDepot and it's great.also (the barn doors and the soft box ring both have a screen installed, this is probably equal to a half stop scrim, so I will be disassembling them to take out those screens, I don't see a need for them. ( I might re install one of them onto the light housings themselves, just to give the lamp bulb a little protection when moving the lights around.Ease of Use / Functionality:Overall, fantastic. they work. The best part here is that they have a dimmer (and a fuse) built into the power switch. This is is just an awesome feature. The dimmer makes these lights so much more versatile, and eliminates the need for scims to stop the light down.The soft boxes are good. they have little heat ports . they create a nice even diffusion. But here's the thing. Assembly is bity. on a real chimera, each corner of the softbox has a little sleeve on the inside for the rods to feed into, so they stay in place and you can just roll up the chimera with the rods still inserted in the softbox. This unit does NOT work like that. There are only two little loops and a small sheath for the end to slip into. so putting it together is a pain, the rods are constantly slipping out of position before you can get them all into the ring. the idea of using these in a portable kit has me feeling like that is very unlikely. (it's fine with just the barn doors, but the soft box would be too much of a hassle to try to set up and break down each time). I will be using them on a green screen stage, so I am not worried about transport.Conclusion:all in all, you are getting a great amount of product for very little money. If you don't throw this equipment around, it should do the job. You are getting professional style tools at an amateur entry level price. If you want to get experience using the same type of equipment the pros use - this is the kit for you. And replacement bulbs are avail on amazon for just $10/lamp. So - that is why I give these lights 5 stars. I am considering the price to value. for $200, I think these lights do a great job of replicating much higher end professional lights that sell for 4-5 times this price.

These lights are not the best quality but I knew that when i purchased them for a great price. For the money I think they're hard to beat. A little hot but to be expected from Halogen. I would buy these again.

Good, simple kit for the price

I bought these last month to take on a road trip for the documentary I'm currently filming, so we could knock out some interviews while on the road. They ended up working out very well for us. We were able to get the look we were hoping for (based on lighting tests I conducted when the lights first arrived), and it looked great.The only complaints I have are relatively minor. The switch box heats up, and the glue holding the plastic cover of the dimmer knob melted, causing the plastic to come off. That's an easy fix, but something to keep in mind for the future. And it appears that the colour tempature changes based on the dimmer setting, but as long as you know that you can plan accordingly. Also, the softboxes attachment to the light isn't the sturdiest. I haven't had one fall off, but if someone were to hit it, there's a good possibility it could cause it to come off.Other than those three things, I'm loving what I can do with this kit. If don't have the money to throw at an Arri kit or any other higher level kit, these will get you what you need in spades. In terms of the light it gives you, it's just as good as some of the more expensive competitors. They are a good start to grow your lighting arsenal with.
