Great slot car beginner or expansion set!

This is my first slot car set purchase. It was purchased for my 2 sons, 2 and 3. I realize that most individuals would consider this age level too young for this type of car set, but with adult supervision, my 3 year old has an absolute blast with this set, and my youngest definitely appreciates watching his dad and older brother race the cars around the track.First, I'll start with the track itself. The track that comes with the set is AFX which, based on the research I performed before deciding on a set to purchase, is one of the higher quality track types. I was not disappointed when I received the set! The tracks snap together nicely, and aren't too difficult to set up or take apart. As with all toys with thin plastic pieces (the plastic clips that secure the tracks together), you can't just smash them together, but if treated with care, I can foresee them lasting quite a long time. The power rails are at an appropriate depth (NOT recessed into the plastic, which would cause cars to lose contact and power), and I haven't noticed any poor or loose electrical contacts between the pieces, which could cause "dead spots" along the track. The only negative I can see with the track (and all track types may be this way, I'm not sure) is that when the cars race around, the track tends to shift or slide a little if on a flat, smooth surface. Rubber pads on the bottom would probably prevent this, which AFX does not include in their track pieces. Again, I don't know if this is an option that any other track type includes, but it would be helpful if setting up on a dining room table or hardwood floor.Second, the cars are great. As a beginner, and especially for my young son, I would have liked to have stronger magnets on the cars that were included so they stick to the track a little more around turns, but the magnets included still allow for fast racing. With the variable power supply set at low, I can run one of the cars around the track full throttle without flying off, which is pretty fast even on "LOW". The detail of the cars is excellent, and contacts, magnets and body are replaceable. Motor and wheels may be replaceable as well, but I can't vouch for that as I haven't tried taking them apart yet. I've had the cars fly off the track numerous times already, and they're still working just fine, so durability seems to be pretty good as well. The slot pegs are deep enough to allow for some drifting around corners, which also helps to keep the cars on the track. I've heard that there are cars with deeper pegs which allow for more stability, but I'm not sure if those would be compatible with all track types. Either way, the cars that come with the track work well, and are appropriate for the track.Third, the power supply. The variable power supply has 3 settings: LOW, MEDIUM, and HIGH, and also allows for the cars to drive either direction on the track by "flipping" the power connection to the track itself. The different power settings are great for us because we're really not that great at racing yet. I tried putting the supply on high, and wow did those cars fly: both down straight-aways and right off the track around corners. Having the ability to physically limit the current supplied to the cars is a great feature for starters, which allows beginners like us to slowly ramp up to higher speeds and learn how to control the cars around corners. This is especially important for my kids because it allows them to basically go full throttle or no throttle anywhere on the track without worrying about always sending the cars flying. Plus, knowing that down the road when they get older we can always ramp up the power for the track, it doesn't limit us to slower cars, and will make it more fun in the future. Overall, having an adjustable power supply is a fantastic feature, especially for beginners or young kids, and this set has it!Next, the controllers. While the length of the cords on the controllers aren't the longest, they do still work rather well, and there's a large throttle "distance" between off and full throttle, which does allow for good level of precision. I can't offer any comparison of different types of variable-speed controllers as this is the first type I've used since I was about 5 years old, but I can say that this controller works well, and is very appropriate for a beginner, or possibly even an experienced slot car enthusiast. All-in-all, with the exception of the length of the cord on the throttles, these work well, and are appropriate for this set.Overall, this track set is excellent. Even if you decide not to create the full track shown on the box, you can have plenty of fun setting up other track layouts that are smaller. The quality is great, features are wonderful, and I would definitely recommend this set to anyone looking to get into slot car racing. My kids love it, and it's something that I'm sure they'll enjoy for years to come. Of course, being an AFX track, you can always find extra track pieces and cars to expand your set. Plus, with the price, this is an excellent value for the amount of track you get. Excellent beginner or expansion set!

A classic holiday favorite

Had the HO race tracks (AFX, Tyco) as a kid. Got one every Christmas for years. Now we set it up around the tree every season.The Good: Its big, its inexpensive, its a lot of fun. The coolest thing is the Power pack, which allows for 3 speeds of racing. Beginner- cars rarely fly off the track at full speed. Normal- got to use a little finesse and can't gun it around the curves. Advanced- old school. Watch the windows.The Bad: There's nostalgia and fun, but can't hold a kids attention like an Xbox can. Broken tabs and 'dead spots' still happen after time.Conclusion- Not nearly as exciting and realistic as the new digital sets, but much, much less expensive.

Great starter slot car set

I made a mistake of buying a very cheap slot car set from Toys R Us last Christmas for my 7-year-old son. While it looked cool, twin loops, etc the track connectors were brittle, the cars had terrible magnets and as a result the things just wouldn't stay on the track. This year I decided we could do better and so started looking at some of the highly rated SCX Digital tracks. The problem with those (other than price) is that they take up a LOT of room. I was concerned that my son wouldn't play the slot car track enough and just couldn't see making a $400+ investment in a starter digital track. I was surprised to find out that AFX is still around...I had one of these tracks when I was a kid his age back in the 1970's. And let me tell you...these things have only improved with age. The track pieces are very sturdy, connect very easily, and this entire set can fit easily onto a 4x8 sheet of plywood (which I simply lay across our seldom-used Air Hockey table). Put a piece of foam insulation under the board to dampen the clickety-clack sounds these cars make and you are good to go.The three-speed power supply works as advertised, although when used on "Expert" mode our hand-held controllers get VERY hot and that concerns me somewhat. We keep it on beginner or intermediate and have no problems there. The cars that come with the set are pretty good with strong magnets so they hang onto the curves pretty well, and are sturdy for the inevitable flying stock-car you'll experience every once in awhile. The track has several different layout configurations you can choose from but we went with the one shown on the box and have had a ton of fun for the past several days since Christmas. Only time will tell if this is truly durable but for now...I'm thrilled with this purchase. Save your money and avoid the cheap $75 sets and invest in an AFX HO-scale track instead...you won't be sorry!
