3A mostly good device
By John Elder Robison
The distance measuring part of this tool is great when used indoors. Its precision and speed are excellent. Outside, though, is another matter. The laser is not bright enough to reach a 200 foot object outdoors during daylight unless you are extremely careful. If you need to measure outdoors with this tool, best do so near dusk or at night when the laser will show up bright. That's really my only criticism; the light is just not powerful enough for the range advertised. This tool also has a neat height calculator that measures distance to the base of a tower, distance to top, and calculates height. But again, that is very much limited by laser power during the day.

5Bosch GLR500 Laser Measure - perfect tool
By Kim B. Wardle
I am building a 6,700 square foot home in Arizona. Most of the rooms have at least two 45 degree 'corners', making it very hard to do the layout. The perimeter of the house has 26 each 90 degree corners and 21 each 45 degree corners. The house has 'bump-outs' for the great room, front room, office and master bedroom. The concrete contractor was pulling his hair out. Once he laid out all the work points for the perimeter of the house pad, I used the laser to correct them. This unit is more accurate than a metal tape measure for all those distances over 35 feet long. I used a tripod that had a 1/4 inch diameter threaded connection directly over the center of the legs. I then attached a plumb bob to the center tube. I placed a laser detector plate (I also own a CST/Berger 57-ALHVPKG Electronic Self Leveling Horizontal and Vertical Rotary Laser) at the farthest apart points of the house, creating a permanent "Check Point". Using dimensions from AutoCAD, I could then correct all the work points within 1/16 of an inch. The problem that most people complain about when using a laser level, is that they get different measurements with repeated uses. The problem is not the unit, but trying to hold it still while taking the measurement. When using a tripod, there was not a chance of movement. As I would verify the dimensions, I would consistantly rechecked the results. Using the laser detector, the measurements were within (+ or -) 1/16 inches of the first dimension.Using the same two check points, we also laid out the driveway, walkways, pool and pool house. This unit is much easier to use and has many more features than the less expensive DLR135, DLR165 units. I received a DLR135 as a bonus when I bought the CST/Berger. It is nice for what it is, but I needed the longer distance model.I would definitely recommend this item.KimOgden, UT

5Surprisingly accurate and precise
By MostlyHarmless
I tested the GLR500 against know ranges from a few feet to a ~50'. In all cases, accuracy is typically within 1/16" - 1/8" of an inch with repeatability on the order of 1/32" - 1/16". I've used it at ranges to ~100' to 150', but did not assess accuracy or precision. In addition to measuring standard distances (in feet/inches, decimal inches, fractional inches, metric units, etc.), it will also derive areas, volume, angles, etc, via a series of measurements. Some things to be aware of: - A highly reflective surface may not register -- you'll get the distance from the instrument to the surface the laser is reflected to. - Small items in the beam (strings/cobwebs/etc.) between the instrument and the point to be measured can produce false readings. While I wouldn't use it for finish carpentry, it excels for things like rough framing, etc.

5Very sharp - careful!
By Patrick Garman
My wife and I bought these knives through another retailer and have loved them. They are sharp, sharp, sharp. Slicing tomatoes is so smooth and easy - and hard veggies like carrots cut like butter. It's nice that this set includes the honing steel. With proper care these should last a very long time.I will say - be careful! I cut up several kitchen towels without realizing it when I dried the knives after washing! I've also knicked my fingers once or twice - I'm used to our old dull and chipped knives. These are very sharp and can cut you without you even realizing it has happened.

5Superior Knives; Perfect Set
By Naomi
I received these knives as a wedding gift two years ago, and I have probably used them every day since, and for some intense cooking projects. They have held up beautifully. I sharpen them every few months, and they are still cutting and chopping just as well as when I first used them.Coming from low-end budget knives stuck in a drawer together, I noticed the difference immediately. Because of the full-length tang, the knives are perfectly steady in my hand while I chop; there is no "wobbling." Most importantly, the knives cut through anything I give them immediately and cleanly. The only time I had some difficulty was with an especially tough pumpkin, but after using some more muscle, the knife handled that well, too.I like the seven-piece set because it seems to address all of my knife-needs (and I cook an elaborate dinner almost every evening). The only overlap is with the 4 1/2" utility knife and the paring knife. Since they are similar in size, they can be used for almost the same functions. I use the paring knife for cutting very small things, like strawberries, and the utility knife for cutting slightly longer things, like when I cut bell peppers into strips.I love the bread knife and find that it also works really well for cutting tomatoes into thin slices. And the crowning glory of this set is the 8" cook's knife, which makes a sound like drawing a sword from a sheath when you pull it from the block. I have been continually impressed with how the knife allows me to dice virtually anything with little trouble. These knives are my favorite things in the kitchen, and they make cooking a thoroughly enjoyable process every time.

5fantastic knives
By runnergirl
I love to cook, not a chef by any means, but I can appreciate good utensils and 'kichen gear'. Since I bought this knife set, I look for an excuse to chop things...even onions, because the using a great knife is amazing. These knives have a really good and balanced weight to them that makes them very steady in your hand. It feels like you are holding a knife. You don't need to put a lot of weight into things, the knife will do the work. Totally reccommend this set.

2Upgrade and downgrade from DLR-165
By Tool Nut 102
The GOOD: Bosch has definitely listened to its customer base ... They added the following features to the GLR-225:+ Inches-only readout, in addition to the ft/in and metric units already available+ Small bubble level, to help make measurements a little more accurate+ Another ~50 ft distance capability (230 ft vs 165 ft for previous model).+ Extension pin for corner measurements is now metal, rather than plastic as on previous model. The BAD:- The keypad has been changed to extremely mushy plastic buttons, which I would expect to fail much sooner than those on the previous model and on the competition's units. The buttons are very clumsy and uncertain to use, with lots of mushy travel and poor tactile feedback.- The time to take a measurement is MUCH slower than on the previous model. It takes several seconds to respond, under even ideal conditions. The previous model would capture a measurement almost instantaneously under good conditions.- The case has been changed from an easy in-out, well-fitting case to one with elastic panels that must be stretched to allow the unit to be jammed into the case or yanked out of the case. Putting the unit back in the case is now a 2-handed job. Very inconvenient when the case is on your belt and you are walking around the jobsite taking measurements here and there, and wanting to re-holster the unit between uses. Also - the bubble level was added as an afterthought, and not integrated into the molded case, so it sticks out and creates an obstruction when trying to get the unit in or out of the case.- Still no backlight.Overall, I would rate this unit as a net DOWNGRADE as compared to the previous model DLR-165. The extremely poor quality of the new keypad and the VERY slow response speed are deal-breakers for me. Grab one of the DLR-165s if you can find one on closeout.

5Pro or DIY: Excellent Product at at Great Price
By Much2Do
Just received my GLR225 yesterday and I am very pleased!Carpenters, architects, installers, maintenance personnel, engineers, and homeowners will benefit from this product. This tool makes quick work of measuring distances, square footage, and volume with easy to use functions.I made four different measurements of my living room within minutes after opening the package. I checked the readings with a tape measure and found them to be within the advertised 1/16". Very impressive! Press the laser button to turn it on, click to "fire the laser," click once again to capture the measurement. Value displayed about a half second after button press, and the unit clicks to indicate you've taken a reading. I found the rubber-top buttons to be comfortable to operate and appear to be durable. I was concerned about this after reading a previous review, but they are quality and probably more moisture resistant than solid plastic buttons. The display shows a small diagram of the type of measurement you've selected. Line mode shows a blinking line, area mode shows a rectangle with the required line blinking, volume mode shows a cube with a blinking side as well. Pythagorean mode displays a triangle for taking indirect height measurements; very handy! Each mode clearly tells you the required input so that you get an accurate result. This allowed me to operate the unit immediately before referring to the manual. Using the adjacent wall function I was able to capture wall square footage for a bedroom in about 30 seconds. This will be great for painting calculations. I did look at the memory function section to make sure I understood how this worked. Lanyard was a bit tricky to install but a twisty-tie mini hook made quick work of it.The unit easily toggles between measurement datums. You can select the bottom, extension pin for corners, top, or rear tapped hole for tripod mounting. Other features include the min/max function for finding diagonals, laser on for pointing, and the ability to change between architectural ( 1' 2-1/2") fractional inch ( 73-1/2") decimal meter ( 4.053 m) and decimal foot (5.638 ft). Integrated level is nice for making sure you don't get a cosine error on linear measurements. Included case is nice for putting on your belt via velcro, but I would prefer a belt clip either on the case or the unit itself. I've noticed laser-enhancing glasses for sale online, and from reviews they seem to aid laser daylight target visibility.Overall this is an excellent tool for the price. There are more advanced laser measurers for sale but they run hundreds of dollars more. A back-lit LCD would be a nice option on these units, but I like the long battery life claimed by other reviews. If quick, accurate measurements around the home or job-site are what you're looking for, this product will get the job done.

5Works well, built well.
By J. York
My first experience with laser/sonic distance measurement tools was the Straight-Line 64030. It was given to me as a gift and quickly found a place in my "unused tools pile". The problem I had with the Straight-Line was that it was not all that reliable or consistent in its measurements. That's being a bit kind; I couldn't trust the Straight-Line as it was wildly wrong about half the time. I assumed products in this category weren't ready for prime time. That was 2003.Fast forwarding to 2011, I was eager to try the Bosch GLR225. The first thing I noticed is how well constructed the Bosch unit is. It is as durable as you would expect of a tool with the Bosch name on it. The plastic is a hard plastic that could probably be thrown out of a moving vehicle and not suffer more than scratches. This thing should hold up a long time.I immediately started testing various measurements in my house and comparing the readings to an old-school measuring tape and the Straight-Line. I found the Bosch GLR225 to be precisely the same as the measuring tape to at least 1/4" accuracy. I measured an indoor space (> 15 feet) and both the Bosch and the measuring tape gave identical measurements while the Straight-Line was off by 1/2 inch.I then tested numerous locations in my house and found that each time, the Bosch was within 1/8" or better of my tape measure. In some of the longer measurements, I think the Bosch was more accurate because the tape measure was not perfectly straight (it bends due to gravity which messes up the measurements.) I did one test where I positioned the laser marker adjacent to a part of a countertop that juts out 3 inches from the wall. I then measured from across the room with the dot on the countertop and then again on the wall. It was accurate to 1/16" in both cases; basically, wherever I pointed the laser dot is *exactly* where it measured to. I was impressed by this fine resolution from 15' away.I then went outdoors and positioned the dot on my back fence. Even in daylight, I could see the dot from 60' away. It was a bit dim, but still quite visible. The measurements continued to be accurate. After about 50 measurements, I have yet to get a bizarre reading from the Bosch GLR225. In the case of the Straight-Line, I would get a crazy result about half the time. Things have come a long way since 2003!!My only complaint is the lack of a backlight for the LCD display: you can't use this in the dark.A few notes:* It has a "min/max" function. If you set it to "min", it will continuously measure wherever the dot is pointed and show both the current distance and the shortest distance that it has measured so far. The "max" function works the same way.* It reports distances to the nearest 1/16 of an inch.* Measurements are quite fast- usually within a second.* It does not appear to be water proof/water resistant- the battery case would easily take on water if it landed in a puddle. I think it would be ok to use in the rain.* It has a handy mode for calculating square footage and cubic footage of an area. The on-screen LCD display helps guide you with handy pictures showing the room dimensions.* It has a handy mode for doing continuous square footage measurements of multiple spaces while adding to the running total. This would make it very easy to go from room to room taking square footage measurements with minimal fuss. Very cool.I think this is a very good product and if you have to do frequent measurements of large spaces, something like this would be a key part of your toolbelt. I think it will last a long time under heavy use.

5For certain use scenarios, it's an unbeatable cost/gig ratio
By Steve S.
I have the 500GB version of this drive. I also use and have used SSD's with SLC and MLC flash, JMicron controllers, Samsung Controllers, Barefoot controllers, and SandForce controllers on 32-bit and 64-bit operating systems. I've used several generations of Raptors, and 3Ware RAID controllers. I'm not saying that to brag, I'm saying it to point out I have a reasonable basis for comparison and expectation. Here's what the drive does well: It's alignment- and OS-agnostic, so it does not care if you run it unaligned on older XP systems. It will, over about 5 cycles, learn what you do and optimize it. You will notice your system boots much faster. It excels on systems where you boot into your OS and do the same basic tasks, say, open MS office and Firefox and Outlook. Here's what the drive does not do well: If you are constantly changing what you run on your computer, your drive will constantly be "learning" what you do. I have also found it does not do well with remote desktop apps that are constantly caching image data. Here's what the drive does that makes it no better or worse than any other mechanical drive: If you are using the drive to store music or videos or such, they are going to go the the platters. Then it's just another very good, high performance 7200RPM notebook drive. Nothing wrong with that at all. Here's the KILLER APP reason to buy this drive: I took a 32-bit Vista Home Premium laptop that was so congested and clogged with programs, leftovers of removed programs, fragmentation, you name it, and just cloned it to this drive. The mechanical drive it was on took literally 5 minutes to get to a useful state on the desktop. This drive, after about 5 boots, learned that our family needed Vista OS, Chrome for Farmville, and iTunes. We now have 30 second boots and even though the drive is still loading services and such, we can launch apps immediately at the desktop. Our primary apps either snap open, or in the case of iTunes launch about 3x faster. It's not subtle, it's huge.If you want a drive that does not have alignment issues with older OS's, and is used primarily on a computer that does about the same sorts of things over and over, this drive will make a huge difference for you. And since it's SLC cache, it's enterprise-class durable in that regard. Also, it mirrors its flash to the mechanical drive, so if the flash fails, it just becomes a regular mechanical drive, sort of like a run-flat tire.

4Cost/Performance Compromise vs SSD; Speed Tests
By J. Cullen
I replaced my 500GB 5400rpm WD with this Momentus XT after doing exhausting research. I use my MacBoook Pro laptop for analytical work involving large datsets. Here is why I settled on the Momentus XT vs an SSD.Momentus XT - 4GB SLC SSD integrated into the hard drive for speedy access commonly used files - Although not as fast as an SSD, but soooo much cheaper than 300GB+ of SSD space. - More vibration and a little more noise than my WD 500GB, but not significantly so. - Mac OS X doesn't support TRIM. I was concerned that a SSD drive would slow down significantly overtime without it. - Toms Hardware highly recommended it over other 7200 rpm laptop hard drives. See their review for all the techy details.Note that the integrated SSD is used only for reading, not for writing. It essentially clones your commonly used files on the 4GB SSD.If you are looking for a sweet spot between speed and space this is it. The Momentus has a 4GB SLC SSD integrated into the hard drive which allows for very fast reads of commonly used data. This translates into really fast application loading like an SSD. It uses a learning algorithm to decide what to store on the SSD so it takes some time to get to optimal performance. Most people have a lot of data that is accessed infrequently on their hard drive. Thus an SSD is overkill since there isn't much benefit to to storing infrequently accessed on a really fast drive. If you are accessing almost all of your data all the time (like in a server application) then maybe an SSD is for you. For the rest of us there is the Momentus XT.I am very particular about the noise with my MacBook Pro. The stock 250GB Seagate hard drive my laptop shipped with was virtually undetectable. When I tried the WD 1TB 5400rpm and WD 500GB 5400rpm, I was disappointed to find that they both made audible white noise like that of a small cpu fan. The Momentus 7200rpm makes slightly more noise than the WD drives, but not significantly so. It does produce more vibrations than the 5400rpm drives which you can feel if you put your hand on the laptop case, but I am willing to live with it for the performance gains. I deducted one star for the less than optimal acoustics. Here are some performance specs from my MacBook Pro using Quick Bench. Note that these times do not reflect the benefit of the integrated SSD. There reflect only the performance of the hard drive portion. The throughput is similar to the WD 1TB 5400rpm which I also reviewed, but the random reading/writing is a bit faster.QuickBench(TM) 4.0 Test ResultsStandard Test Results in MB/SecAverages:Seq. 4Good performance boost for the money
By ooglek
I've read a lot of reviews, some good, some bad. I think some people have this idea that the product will speed everything up all the time, and this sets bad expectations. What this drive will do is cache often used data, such as core Operating System files used at boot and commonly used applications, and store that data in its 4GB SSD-like cache. If your drive already reads and writes pretty fast, in the neighborhood of 75-100MBps (megaBytes not bits), other than boot up and application loading, you aren't going to notice much of a difference.I use Apple's OS X Snow Leopard, and it definitely boots faster (1 minute 30 seconds prior to this disk, now 55 seconds from power on to ready + all my startup apps running), and commonly run applications also start up noticeably faster.I upgraded from a bit slower drive, so I see some performance gain there, but nothing huge.Overall I got the disk read speeds I was looking for -- faster boot, faster common app loading, and an overall boost in performance by upgrading from a slower drive altogether. This drive won't change your life, unless you are booting several times a day or loading the same data repeatedly. It's a fine drive with the benefit of faster boot and common app loading times, nothing more.

5Love it!
By S. Kennedy
The perfect little addition to our growing Snow Village. The inn has great detail and color. Only downside is that the sign chain broke, but I was about to link it back together using a pair of tweezers and my eye glasses, of course. We love it.

Perfect addition to my Country Snow Village. Being someone who enjoys staying at country inns and B&B's I was able to put that into my Village setup. Can almost see Bob Newhart waiting at the door to greet you. Market Place Seller delivered everything as promised and quickly. All parts in new condition and complete.

Product Description

The Seagate Momentus XT drive offers hybrid storage with Adaptive Memory technology, enabling the drive to deliver higher capacities up to 500 GB and SSD-like performance. The Momentus XT drive is designed for all standard laptop PCs and is OS-, driver- and software independent, making this drive easy to integrate and easy to use. Adaptive Memory technology enables the drive to tailor its performance to the user. Whether you are gaming, editing digital media or crunching numbers, the performance is optimized and ready for your next move. Adaptive Memory technology is a Seagate data management technique that constantly monitors and quickly recalls data usage and preferences. It places files and data that the user will likely access again and again into the solid state portion of the drive. When the user requires the data or application file, it already sits in an instantly accessible location, thereby customizing system performance for the user. Constant monitoring dynamically improves overall response time based on personal usage. You can perform at your best no matter how you use your laptop PC.

5Great price, nice beds
By Leaser
This was the first time I have tried a Crypton bed for my dogs. I have two Labs, and I like to have beds for them out on the pool deck. They go out every evening and chew their bones on them, as well as laying on them during the day for a little sun. I have been going through a bed a year each as I'm not always home to bring them under cover when it rains, and eventually the beds get mildew spots despite washing the covers regularly. I was previously using Jax and Bones, as well as some lesser known brands, but always beds that are meant to be used outdoors. I have had these now for a few months. They are far superior to the others I have tried and are holding up really well. As far as the reviews that the beds are so fluffy when you get them that the dogs can't get on them, my 70 pound Labs did precariously balance on them at first, but I got down on my hands and knees and smooshed them down for a minute. The dogs were immediately able to get on them (and were amused that I was on their beds). They love them. Buy these without any hesitation for outdoor use!

5Unbelievably good.
By amumstheword
I have lots of dogs and foster more of them. I spend around $1000/year on cushions for indoors and the screened porch, because they get chewed up, beat up, faded or otherwise rendered useless or ugly. These were discounted briefly, so I bought 3 large ones, figuring that at the price I could take a chance on putting them out in the yard, even though I've never had an outdoor model that didn't get soggy, moldy and hideous. Astonishingly, these have weathered (literally) months of sun, rain, mud, snow and dirty dogs and they look great. The dogs love them. The yard looks like a dog spa with a pup lounging on every bright and cushy pillow. Hose them, shake them off. That's it for maintenance. I bought two medium ones for the screened porch, and they look great and work wonderfully there, too. I continue to be amazed.

5Taliaferro-Cole House
By Freddie and Ethel
I put this house in my space in the bay window in my living room. It is a great piece and goes with the other Williamsburg style lighted houses I have. If you don't want to use electric lighting, you can get tea lights to use in them, which work great! I am going to build a simple base with a hole in it which will even be better. We have actually been to Williamsburg a few times and the Department 56 Williamsburg collection is about as realistic as you can get.
