Deceptive Marketing - Teachers Beware

I purchased this item to use in my 7-8 science classroom. After researching three different web sites, it appeared that this could be use in small groups. My plan was to have several small groups building the same model. That is not possible, you can't even build multiple compatible models, you can build only one model per kit. For example, I can't build four different gear types and conduct a gear unit. This seems a little ridiculous considering that there are over 3,000 parts. Not real handy after spending $600 on these kits. My biggest issue with the product is that I feel the description misrepresents the product. The company sent the following e-mail in response to my complaint."Greetings from K'NEX. Thank for sharing your comments with us regarding your new Simple Machine Deluxe Set. We appreciate your feedback and we have also passed it along to our Education Division. Although you as an educator are welcome to use the set in whatever way you choose, we have found that the set is most effectively used with groups of 2-3 students each are working on a model from one of the five different machine types. This method will allow the 10-15 students, working in teams, to be accommodated as is indicated on our website. If your plan was to have all the students learning about one machine type at a time you may want to build a model and have it displayed in the classroom as you teach (two sets would allow you to build two of the same model built at a time).Your friends at K'NEX."

One of the best toys of all time!!

I purchased the original big ball factory for my girls many years ago.We spent countless hours and tons of fun putting it together. This is a great toy and anyone interested in mechanics or engineering should considering purchasing it.Highly recommended!!

I received the Big Ball Factory 18 years ago for Christmas. At that time I was 12, my brother 13, and my cousin was 10. We spent two days straight putting this thing together. I have done several knex projects since then but there is no comparison to the Big Ball Factory. It's amazing, intricate, and so darn cool when complete. Especially if you buy the motor to go with it. We left it assembled in our living room for months and loved playing with it and showing it off. I constructed it a few more times in high school with different friends and even once in my twenties because seriously its just that much fun to build and its such a fun conversation piece. Every few years my parents will buy the family a new large model knex set for fun and nostalgia and they're all great, but none are nearly as interesting to put together or as cool when done as the Big Ball Factory. This last Christmas we pulled it out one more time and my niece who is six helped out. It was a little tough for her and she couldn't fully follow the instructions on her own but she had fun building helping out anyway and my brother (her dad) and I had just as much fun as we did when we were kids. It's hard to believe one present from 18 years ago has been such a universal and on going joy. It's nearly impossible to find the Big Ball Factory on its own anymore, so don't hesitate if you're considering this set. That part alone is worth every penny. Don't be fooled into thinking any of the other "ball" or "roller coaster" sets by knex are similar. They're nice, but they seriously pale in comparison to the original Big Ball Factory featured in this set.
