4Fun guitar!
By Tron
I've been playing guitar since caveman times. I've been looking for something smaller than my Martin dreadnought--for a new tone in my recordings, and to have a guitar I can sit on the couch and play comfortably. I saw this in GC, picked it up and fell in love. OK, fell in like. It's easy to play, sounds great, has a solid wood top, and the price can't be beat. I actually went back to the store later to make sure I had the right model number. I haven't bought one yet but I will and I'll get it here through Amazon. (Buy a guitar at GC? Who does THAT?) Recommended if you're a seasoned player, or if you're looking for an inexpensive yet well-built, easy-to-play guitar for your kid.

4Beautiful sound; action required a little work.
By David Burch
The only complaint I have with this Korean-made Takamine guitar is the action height at the nut. My guitar's bridge saddle and neck tension were perfect, but the string slots in the nut were higher than they should have been on a guitar that otherwise is outstanding. A couple of careful sessions with very fine miniature rattail files and fine saws, and the action is perfect. A shop sale should include this for free, but if you buy a guitar online, you are on your own. You CAN do it, but you must be very careful and work GRADUALLY. Use miniature files and thin-bladed hobby saws. These are tools I already own, and I have done this before, so I don't feel bad about having to do it myself. If you're not sure of yourself, an experienced guitar tech will probably charge $20-$50 for the service, which should include re-work if you're not satisfied with the first lowering. The sound of this guitar, however, makes the effort worthwhile. Good bass response and wonderful midrange tone combine with just the right amount of brightness in the highs to make this a superb fingerstyle guitar. Sustain is excellent. The cedar top doesn't require a strong attack to produce a truly sweet tone. A pleasant surprise is the guitar's response to flatpicking -- notes are well-articulated across the fingerboard, with fullness and volume to compete with dreadnoughts. Strumming produces balanced chords with no muddiness in the middle, a claim I can't make even for my 42-year old Gibson.I like the matte finish and conservative appearance of this guitar. Internal bracing is all scalloped, making it light in weight and a pleasure to play. The NEX "mini-jumbo" body has a lot going for it -- terrific playing comfort with negligible loss of volume. At this price, the minor effort to achieve good fingerboard action was well-spent to acquire such a versatile guitar.

5Awesome guitar
By cam
I got this guitar basically new (it was a shop demo) on ebay for under $170 and I can hardly believe what a great deal it is. I'm not an expert but I'd say I'm a bit past the beginner stage-- I've owned maybe 3 or 4 different steel string guitars and always ended up selling them. It's hard to find a guitar under $300 that doesn't frustrate you, constantly sound out of tune, hurt you fingers, sound "tinny", etc. I've only been playing this guitar for a day and I know I'm going to keep it for years. The neck feels so good and comfortable, I love that there aren't annoying bridge pins, it's not too neck heavy, the tuners are great, and the sound is amazing. It's not extremely loud but chords sound so beautiful. It really inspires me to keep picking it up and looking for new songs to learn. I switched the strings immediately to Martin silk and steel ones because I enjoy finger style playing, and I really love the mellow rich sound it produces. The cedar top is extremely fragile and you have to be very careful with the ball end of the strings when changing them due to the structure. It already has a little ding from when I changed them this morning. However, the guitar is still beautiful (I love the off-white binding) and I don't mind if it's easily scratched-- the matte finish makes it hard to see blemishes anyway. Buy this guitar, you won't regret it.
