It Works!

I had this surge protector on my pool equipment when my house received a large electrical spike from lightning, it worked as advertised and saved my electrical panel and pool equipment. The surge protector itself was fried!! Make sure you check it after a strike like that and replace it quickly. I keep an extra one in the basement in preparation for the next potential lightning strike.

This is a great item. Not sure if I'll ever see it work, but it's good for piece of mind.Installation was easy. I moved a double pole breaker at the top of the panel to the bottom (just extended the wires with a twist connector). The warnings about not piggybacking off of high draw or sensitive circuits concerned me, so I added a double pole 20 amp breaker. I have plenty of extra room in my panel and a breaker is only about $7, so I figured it was better to have the spd on its own circuit. I also had to buy a male and female PVC adapter along with 10ft of conduit (only needed about 8 inches of it). Because of other wires coming out of the panel knockouts, I had to extend the spd to about a foot out from the panel. Hooked all the wires up, trimmed the extra wire, and restored the power. Works great, green light is on.Update: After just over a year, the green "working" light went out for no reason. No surge, no tripped breakers. Contacted Intermatic and filled out a warranty claim. They promptly sent me a new one for free.Also, the wires appear to be aluminum; I was worried about them oxidizing. I contacted Intermatic and they said not to worry: the wires are tinned copper.

Good Service

I bought 2 of these for 2 seperate incoming panels. One surge protector failed (the green light went out) after about 6 months. I live out in the country so it might have been hit by a surge and died in service. In any case, I called Intermatic and they replaced it under warranty without arguement.As far as the function of the surge protector - I have had no failures in the house. It seems like my PC UPS beeps less often than it used to, which is good.
