Couldn't do without it
By Rachael
I just had my third baby 5 weeks ago. My older two children are 4 and 2 and still need a lot of attention, so I knew that a baby carrier would be a must. I decided on a cotton ring sling, and after a lot of comparison of brands and prices, I settled on the Maya Wrap.I ordered it through Amazon, and as always I was happy with how promptly it arrived.Using it was a little tricky at first. I kept trying to use cradle hold, and the baby kept sinking down into the fabric, and his body kept curling into itself, causing me to worry about his breathing. After checking into some babywearing websites, I learned that the upright tummy-to-tummy hold is really preferable to newborns and less risky than cradle. It is demonstrated in the DVD that is included with the sling. That's what we've been using ever since. The baby is as content as he can be tucked against my chest right under my chin. Once he's in and I start moving, he usually lists to one side in a slight recline that's comfortable for him and entirely safe. I can look down and see his whole face as he sleeps peacefully.I use this sling at least a few times a day. I use it around the house when he's awake and wanting to be held. He relaxes in it while I do housework and tend to the other kids. I use it at the grocery store, and I don't know what I'd do without it. The two other kids are in the two seats at the top of the cart. If I were to put a carseat in the back of the cart, there'd be no room for groceries. I use it just about wherever I take the kids, so that I can hold their hands in parking lots and still have my baby safe and sound against me.I ordered a medium, which is for anyone 5'2" to 5'9". That's most women. A small is for those who are 5'2" and petite. I'm 5'3" and petite, so I hesitated on the size, wondering if the medium would really be too big. It turns out it is large, the tail hanging down to about mid-calf. What I often do is wrap the tail around my waist and tuck it underneath the baby. If I couldn't do that, I might be a little annoyed with the length of the tail. I'd have to tuck it into clothing or maybe tie it in a knot. You can breastfeed in a ring sling, and I sometimes do in this one. I have to sit down and loosen the sling a lot. I am not able to walk around and breastfeed hands-free in the sling like some can. I don't find it necessary. He doesn't nurse so often that I can't take a few minutes to sit down with him.I love the fabric. It's so soft and breathable, and has just a little bit of give. I think the olive green color is beautiful too.I would highly recommend this sling to anyone who's having a baby, especially if they already have other babies to take care of. It is the second set of hands you will wish you have.

Baby Loves it!

I bought this after reading about Baby slings and the benefits of carrying your Baby. This is by far the best Baby product that I have purchased. I started using this when my daughter was 3 months old. My only regret is that I didnt buy this earlier. I put her in this and can do laundry, put away dishes, sort mail, pick up around the house. I can pretty much do anything but cook! She loves to go on walks around the neighborhood with me in this. She also likes grocery shopping and looks around quietly. I have used this 3 times at the airport and it is a lifesaver. It keeps her calm and lets me have my hands. When she is fussy at night, I walk around with her in this and she falls asleep. As a working Mother (in and out of the home) , this lets you have more bonding time with your Baby but allows a lot of efficiency. I havent figured out how to nurse with this on, yet. The green color is very nice. The included video is helpful as it does take a few tries to figure this out. I highly recommend this product. The 4 stars is because I do think it is pricey for a piece of cloth and 2 rings but it is still a great product.

Perfect for what I was looking for.

There are a lot of options for baby carriers to wear the baby. I think that you have to be aware of what your needs are, and why you want to use a carrier. I've listed my overview of pros and cons for the three carriers I've tried, and hope it will help you better decide which is best for you. Also note that, as the baby gets bigger, all carriers are in some way, to some degree, going to cause discomfort. You've got +20 lbs strapped to your torso! It's bound to cause some discomfort. The key is finding which best suits your needs, and can minimize the discomfort the most.Moby WrapI really loved the Moby for around the house and walking the dogs. I had a September baby, and the layers of fabric helped to keep him snuggly warm in our cooler house. It was VERY comfortable to wear, and he loved to be cuddled up in it. I thought he felt very safe, even for new mom standards. I also loved that it kept the baby hidden enough that random strangers couldn't walk up and touch him ("Oh a baby!! How CUTE!" let me touch his little face with my germy hands!). It has great head support, with little fear of suffocation. The problem with the Moby is that it is a LOT of fabric to handle and wrap up. As another reviewer mentioned, it's not ideal for going out, and having to wrap up in a parking lot, or to unwrap and pack up. It can also get pretty warm. I didn't use it for more than a couple months for these reasons. But I am definitely going to pass it on to a friend about to have her first baby.I think the Moby is perfect for people who are home more often (maybe a stay at home mom, especially if she has other children), especially for newborns. Again, it is VERY ergonomical, and probably the most comfortable of the carriers.Baby BjornThe Bjorn is wonderful. It's a snap to get the baby in and out of. The forward or front facing options are great for once your infant is beginning to become curious of the world, but may need a nap while you're walking around. Just flip 'em around. The Bjorn is very portable, and saved my sanity and arms when I had to take my 5 month old on a plane trip. It is also comfortable enough to wear around the house so you can cook, clean, or do whatever while your baby is happy and safe. The infant seems to be comfortable, too, considering my son would get excited and start crawling over as soon as he saw me putting it on so we could walk the dogs. The drawbacks, for me, are few, but kind of a big deal. The Bjorn is a little bit bulky, and doesn't fit well in a diaper bag. As my son approached 1 year, I found his dangling legs to be awkward, along with this placement just strapped to my chest. It was also starting to hurt my lower back and between my shoulder blades as he became larger. Could be bad posture, but it was making our dog walks very short because of my discomfort. And I would end up tripping on the dogs because I couldn't see them. Also, my husband is a big guy, and couldn't wear the Bjorn at all. They do sell extensions, but we didn't try them.I think the Bjorn is great for people who want to wear the baby while they are out and about, and is perfect for young infants. It isn't bad for extended use, but can cause some soreness. But I suppose that, to a certain extent, is to be expected when you strap a weight to your chest.Maya WrapI got the Maya when my son was 1 yr old, so I can't comment for newborn or young infant use. I can say that my mom LOVED hers when she had my twin sisters, and could carry both of them at the same time for several months. I love that I can hold my 1 yr old on my hip with the Maya without destroying my posture or arm. It's very comfortable, and I can switch sides if my shoulder does become a little sore. The pocket is absolutely wonderful. It's large enough for a diaper, travel wipes case, wallet, keys, and a pacifier. My son loves it, he immediately smiles and walks up to me when he sees me putting it on. Also, my larger husband can wear it. He doesn't love it as much as I do, but at least he can walk the dogs when he's home alone with the baby. I think he also hasn't taken the time to play with it and figure out how to make it comfortable. Once you've got it, though, it takes seconds to get the baby in and out. Seriously, seconds. About the same as the Bjorn. Also, keep the plastic zippered package it came in. You can shove the sling into it and it becomes more portable than the Bjorn.Drawbacks for the Maya ... well. I haven't had it as long as I have had the Moby and Bjorn, so I haven't had as much time to discover them. It can be a little quirky to get the hang of. And is probably very uncomfortable and possibly unsafe if you don't review the instructions and fiddle with it until you get it.I think the Maya is ideal for older infants and young toddlers. The variety of positions make it the most customizable. I think it's the most comfortable for my 1 yr old, and the least awkward. It's very portable, great for on the go or for around the house. Easy to whip out in the middle of a grocery store to throw a fussy baby in. Or when you're in the middle of cooking dinner and a little someone is angry, hungry, and impatient! So far the Maya is my favorite. Again, I didn't have it or newborn use. But it's fantastic for my 1 year old so I can walk the dogs, run to the store even if it's near nap time. I am happy that I have it now for when I have my second, though!
