A great addition to the cabinet

As noted in my review on the Leviton cabinet, there is one design flaw with the whole system and that is that adding accessories like this one AFTER the cabinet is hung is difficult unless you can put a screw directly into whatever is behind the cabinet (like plywood). Now, if you install this BEFORE hanging the cabinet or if you can easily get to the back of the cabinet (like in an unfinished basement) then it isn't a big deal. Beside that problem, the rest of it seems to be just great. Yes, it is made largely of plastic, but the plastic is thick and sturdy and I don't think it's going to be a problem. On the other hand, even though this is a CAT 6 patch panel, it is quite overpriced compared to other options like TRENDnet 24-port Cat6 Unshielded Patch Panel TC-P24C6. If you have a Leviton cabinet and can get to the back or screw stuff into whatever it is mounted on and you have cat5/6 cabling to organize AND if you don't mind the large price tag, then I would recommend this accessory to help clean up your wires and contain them neatly in the cabinet.

This is a fine 110-style patch panel for routing telephone, fax, modem and ethernet for up to 24 locations.Patch panels like this made the 66 blocks obsolete for network closets, except this bumps up to CAT 6 which is backward compatible with CAT5 and also the cable standard for Gigabit Ethernet. The improvement in CAT6 comes from thicker wires in the four twisted wire pair cable. Definitely the near future is CAT 6.However, it's in most cases better to go with a patch panel that fits in a 19" standard rack. After all, if there's a wall mount rack enclosure cabinet in the sever room/closet, a patch panel should be placed in it. Then for yet more money but much better value, the Leviton 2RU 48-port flat panel for CAT 6a/ CAT6/ CAT 5e looks mighty good: 69586-U48 - Leviton eXtreme 6+ Category 6 Flat 110-Style Patch Panel, 48-Port.

I previously reviewed the Leviton 476TM-512 Twist and Mount Patch Panel, 12 CAT 5e Ports and found that it did a great job of cleaning up part of my home wiring (yes I have a lot of wiring in my house). I decided to expand how my structured media cabinet was being used and further clean up the remaining wiring with this particular patch panel. Overall I am very happy with the appearance of everything and the way it works. Though as before I will reiterate that I find the price of these products a bit silly due to the overall build quality and complexity. At the time of home construction this wouldn't feel so bad as it could be built into the wiring cost, but afterwards it really does hurt. Most homes probably won't need this degree of wiring due to the prevalence of wireless networks and can spare themselves this expense. However, if you do have a rats nest of wiring in your basement (as I did), this does a fine job of making everything neatly labelled and cleaned up, especially when used in conjunction with an enclosure like this: Leviton 102-47605-28W 28" Structured Media Enclosures with Cover.
