For the money, it's not bad. It's not great, though.
By Janel Adair Copeland
About ten years ago, I built a wooden chest from a kit that I got at my local hobby shop (for less than half the price of these, I might add). I finished it off, stained it, and gave it as a gift. It was so simple and easy that I figured that it made no sense to ever buy a wooden chest or toy chest.Fast forward a decade to a culture that has become completely disposable and me with two 3 year olds that need toy chests. The hobby shop chest kits are a thing of the past. Toy chests are made of MDF or plastic, or if you actually can find wood, the bottom is a flimsy piece of wood or even glorified cardboard that snaps in two the minute anything is put in it. I might be able to find an all wood piece if I'm willing to pay 3 or 400 hundred dollars. Even then, I can't be guaranteed that the bottom again won't be made of a cheap piece of nothing. So, I've been looking. This is the best I could find, and it's fairly lacking. The joinery is large headed metal screw with lockbolt combinations that you find in most flat-pack furniture today. The bottom is... well, it is wood, but it's pretty thin. If you have children that are likely to stand in their toybox, do NOT buy this for them, the bottom will break. Another disappointment is the piano hinge. While it's a fine hinge, the joining of it instructs you to screw it to the outside of the box, which is an unsightly design element. The guide edges are not necessarily precisely cut, either, at least not for each individual box with it's own slightly not-perfectly-flat piece of wood.Assembled? It's pretty okay. It will make do for what it's supposed to be - a simple toy chest for their rooms. It's better than anything else I have found for the price. As a mother of twins, I am always aware of price because the price is almost always doubled for me. So, it does well as an all wood toybox that can be painted, stained or decorated to your individual wishes. The safety lid support is fine, and it does not slam closed.I can't say I'm not disappointed, though. I had hoped to find a piece of furniture that would last them at least a decade or more. The design elements and the flimsy bottom mean that this piece is unlikely to last them out of their single digit years. So, it is yet another piece of disposable furniture. That's unfortunate, but we'll enjoy them for what they are during the time we have them.If you want an all-wood, solid piece of furniture that will grow with your child, you're going to have to turn elsewhere. It's a shame that this isn't it. I would have happily paid another 50-100 a piece for a bottom that was as thickly cut as the sides and top, and a piano hinge that was made to go inside the top. Are you listening, Little Colorado?

Looks beautiful and has a great lid
By Sable
My husband easily finished this toy chest and put it together. It is the perfect size for our baby's small room and will fit a lot of toys. The wood sides seem sturdy and look nice. The lid will stay open on its own and has a nice hinge. The only complaint I have is that unlike the sides and lid, the bottom is a more flimsy piece of wood. I had expected the bottom piece to be the same as the rest and feel like they may have been cutting corners with it. We will see how it stands the test of time!

Overall nice chest
By debbie
In a nut shell - good quality solid wood, nice design. The bottom is a thin and flimsy piece that should have been designed to match the rest of the chest so there is more durability and longevity for the chest. My kids always crawled into their toybox and I am afraid my grandson might fall through and get hurt.
